Port Augusta Netball is on a high after the Port Augusta combined team took out the Smart Choice South Australian Country Championship for the third year in succession. The girls had a wonderful carnival this year, going through the whole carnival undefeated. In a very one sided grand final, Port Augusta walked all over the Barossa Light and Gawler team. Unbelievable movement and accuracy from Mandy Chapman and Courtney Nowak, both shooting 90% in the grand final, combined with a brilliant defensive effort from Mel Wilson and Angela McAuliffe, gave Port Augusta the winning edge. Mid court players Karah Harrison, Megan Waters, Kerryn Heimiester and Jacinta McKenzie had total control of the court and did not give the opposition a look in at any time during the game. Port Augusta owe part of their success to coach Carmen Kernahan and manageress Lee-anne Maule. A great effort once again girls, does this leave anything to achieve next year? Maybe the Quad. Port Augusta "A Grade" combined side which narrowly lost the State Country Grand Final in Adelaide on June 11, 2001. It was the first time Port Augusta had made the Grand Final for many, many years. Pictured are Tracy Petry (Team Manager), Marcia Byron, Alice Payne, Mel Wilson, Diane Broadbridge, Angela Malkin (Vice Captain), Leeann Harbridge (Coach), Louise Broadbridge, Tiffany Ritter, Mandy Chapman (Captain), Carmen Kernahan and Erin Harrison. Following their great performance the following players where also named in the Country State Team, Chapman, Malkin, Kernahan, Payne and Louise Broadbridge. Mandy Chapman was also named in the top 10 players for the carnival. Congratulations to Angela Malkin, Mandy Chapman and Courtney Nowak who were named in the 2003 Smart Choice top 10 players of the carnival. Special mention to Mandy who has been named as a top 10 player for every carnival for the last five years. Coach Leeann Harbridge, Manager Tracy Petry, Courtney Nowak, Angela Malkin (Vice Captain), Diane Humphrys, Mandy Chapman (Captain), Louise Broadbridge, Megan Waters, Marcia Byron, Karah Harrison, Simone Allen, Jacinta McKenzie. The Port Augusta A Grade Combined Netball Team victorious in defeating South East team Kowroee Naracoorte Tatiara convincingly by 6 goals at the State Country Championships at Etsa Park over the June long weekend. The team you might say won 'against the odds', given the poor preparation they had due to illness and injury resulting in late withdrawals of several key defenders and team members of the previous final's team which was defeated by Western Border. This provided opportunities for new talent in Janolin Miller, Tanya Aird and Jacinta McKenzie who proved to be equal to the task. Despite the lack of enthusiasm by others in close proximity to the team, the girls commitment and dedication to each other based on the belief that they would be final's contenders paid off. The team acknowledges the efforts of coach Leeann Harbridge, manager Tracey Petry, umpire John Higginson, First Aider Val Waterworth, Selectors Joy Ferber, Sam Schupelius and Sharene Dearlove for their time and patience and faith. mark chapman port augusta maddison chapman mandy chapman port augusta sport and netball football fitness magpies netball club railways netball club shamrocks netball club st joseph netball club vikings netball club and quorn netball club port augusta netball association
